Feeling less lonely in Nijmegen
Loneliness is a huge issue among students, especially internationals who leave friends and family behind. In Nijmegen many students find themselves in the same situation and therefore we made a list of activities you can do to feel less lonely.
Within your faculty you can find likeminded students by attending activities of study organisation and student associations. You can meet students who do the same or similar studies, and some might even be in the same year. The Radboud University has an overview online you can check.
A great way to meet new people is going to events. Student organisations offer several events, but you can also find parties in student housings or activities within our community. Furthermore, Facebook is a great place to check out what is going on in your city and check out our Instagram account for autumn events.
Sport connects people as well. You can get the Radboud Sport Centre subscription to go to the gym, attend several courses or become part of a sports team. Nijmegen also has sport clubs not within the subscription like the Nijmegen Gaelic Football Club. They take part in Benelux tournaments and have training twice a week for example.
Stay in contact with your friends and family from home. You can meet online, have a virtual cup of tea or play games together. It is always nice to stay up to date with what is going on in the life of your loved ones. Online is a great way to do so and virtual activities together can help against loneliness.
If your mental health is affected, you can seek help within your university. They provide counselling, psychological help as well as other support. It is possible to get in contact with the several type of help online and schedule appointments. You will get the help you need and might get information on further steps you can take like finding a therapist for example.
We hope to help you with our suggestions in times you might feel lonely. Try to find something you like and you will hopefully meet nice people that way. Find ideas for indoor activities in Nijmegen on our blog.
